Work: Song of Magellan

The book will consist of a poem and print (collagraph and monoprint), in a hard-bound book that opens from the centre outwards into two sets of pages. Pages can be read across the open structure and allows for different readings depending on which page the book is opened to. The poem will be in the voice of Magellan, covering emotional aspects of the journey alongside factual discoveries, addressing hope, expectation, the five senses, religious fervour and relationships. I see the Magellan book as being quite colourful.

I like to bring science and art together, often involving the human body and chemistry/alchemical processes, but also psychology and metaphysical representations of science. I would like to make sure that the work I create for this has a strong sense of ‘self’, albeit the imagined self, and of the humanity and resilience required to undertake such a voyage.

At this point I cannot say precisely how many pages it will be, but previous work have generally been about 30-34 pages long. It will be a small variable edition (because of the monoprinting aspect of the artwork) and should retail for £300. I expect this to be approximately 8″ wide closed, but if both wings are opened the book would be 16″.
