Artist: Kathy Bruce USA / UK
Work: The Island of Burne, and the Place Where the Living Leaves Are
Proposal Concept In the narrative account of “Magellan’s Voyage” by Antonio Pigafetta (completed in 1525), he describes the Magellan expedition’s arrival at the Island of Burne. (Burma, known today as Myanmar) His original hand-drawn map of the island is labeled, “Figure de fifile de Burne-et du lieu ou font les fueilles vifues” or, “The Island of Burne, and of the place where the living leaves are” that is the subject of my project. Inspired by imagining a visual image of living leaves (book pages), the map, and the island, my work will explore these three notions presenting in the form of an altered sculptural book created specifically on this theme for this exhibition. Proposal Details: Unique one of a kind book; dimensions: 5” x 7″; materials: a 19th c. book (marbleized cover) will be the base for overlaying found objects as in previous book projects. Other materials will include, cord, thread, wood, drawing, and collage images. Work will be for sale, price to be determined.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My work is normally characterized by large environmental installations of figures that incorporate live plant material in or around the structures built in situ within Nature. However, when not working on large-scale projects, my smaller, private investigations take the form of artist books and collages exploring the more intimate relationship between the man and Nature.
