Work: Magellan

This work commemorates the journey Ferdinand Magellan took between 1519 and 1521. It uses pages from an atlas for the outer casing, which are obscured with white to reflect the unknown. The images represent the man himself, the extent of his voyage and the task of navigation. The work is approx 18cm square and tied with hand spun linen thread.

Inside are four map folds, again made from atlas pages and obscured with white. Each one includes a Magellan quote which reflects the courage and the daring of the man, as well as the challenges he and others like him faced in taking this journey and questioning long held beliefs of the time about the world.

Go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart.

The sea is dangerous and it’s storms terrible, but there obstacles have never been sufficient reason to remain ashore… Unlike the mediocre, intrepid spirits seek victory over those things that seem impossible….It is with an iron will that they embark on the most daring of all endeavours… to meet with the shadowy future without fear and conquer the unknown.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My inspiration  comes from many sources – literary, scientific, historic and the abstract. My work can sometimes be described as quirky and including a touch of whimsy. I enjoy creating works which include movement or an element of surprise. I enjoy exploring different structures and a variety of book forms from the traditional to those which challenge the viewer’s perception of what a book is or should be. I am keen to match the subject or theme of a book to its form.
